So it's unfilmable; if Borges can write literary criticism about books which don't exist, surely it's not so radical to devise screenplays which are never meant to be filmed. When Vladimir Nabokov was approached by Stanley Kubrick in 1959 about making a movie of his masterpiece, Lolita, Nabokov at first refused the temptation to write the screenplay. In 1962, Stanley Kubrick took a shot at turning Vladimir Nabokov’s formally banned masterpiece novel Lolita into a feature film. At the time, the film wasn’t a huge success, with Kubrick putting a lot this down to restrictions that were put upon him during the production of the movie. It was written in the fall of 1998 and published the fall of 1999 (!). I'd been studying Nabokov since 1991, the year I fell in love with "Lolita" (1955). While not entirely faithful to the novel, it captures the book's spirit and is nonetheless a masterpiece on its own terms. To fully appreciate what Kubrick has done, compare this version to Adrian Lyne's anemic remake.

Understandably, Kubrick had to boil its 400 pages down. But with today’s digital technology making film so much cheaper to produce and a wider variety of viewing platforms available, Nabokov’s dream could be realised, word for word, image for image. Of the two existing adaptations, Nabokov himself lamented the flaws in the Kubrick version.
